One of my not-so-favourite things

When people ask me what I do, I usually tell them I'm a psychologist. This isn't technically true yet but it's the easiest way to explain what I do.

My least favourite response is: Are you analyzing me right now?

What am I supposed to say to that? That's just awkward.

I have two requests, internet.
First - give me some funny one-liners I could respond with.
Second - write a comment about the most frequent/funny/annoying response when people learn your vocation or hobby.

Sometimes when I tell people that I'm a photographer or went to school for photography, they ask if I work at sears. Tear. I'd rather be analyzing people. You should just answer 'yes'.

People ask me what I do and I say, "I work for a geology company."

Then people say, "Didn't you go to school for journalism?"

So I say, "Yes. But journalism doesn't appear on the TSX so people don't want to pay me to do that."

Maybe not funny, but true nonetheless.

Also true: Too many people write for free. Including me.

Q: Are you analyzing me right now?

A: What's there to analyze?

A: Yeah, and man, you're messed up.

A: Honey, for $40 I can do anything you want.

Q: So do you have a job?
A: Nope, I'm a Stay At Home Mom with two kids and another one on the way.
Q: (incredulously) Sooo...what do you do all day?

I totally think you should answer "yes and man, do you have issues!" or something like that.
I get the whole SAHM routine too - "must be nice to be at home all day and do whatever you want". Um, yah, that's what I do all freakin' day long!
Hope you are well. I think about you guys often!

I'm a mechanical engineer.

Response 1: So what is it that you do?

Response 2: So...you must be good at math.

Response 3: Oh, I took that in school!

Further conversation results in the discovery that by "that", the person means Engineering Technology. An Engineer would never refer to the 4+ years of school as "that".

Response 4: Engineers don't know anything.

Next time I hear that though, I think I'm going to tell the guy that they don't teach Engineering students how to do his job and if they did he would probably be unemployed. Rude? Yes. Necessary? I think so.

People always ask me if I'm still in nursing. I've never been in nursing.

When people just ask you that say: "Yeah, I've never heard that before."
Not super rude, but probably will make them shut up.

I empathize with your plight. I've tried changing my response to "counsellor" to see how that would go. It usually prompts people to ask if I work with children or at a camp. I've also tried therapist, to which you usually just get frightened silence. Maybe that should be the direction that you head in.

Hey Jamie, you could ask them how that makes them feel and then proceed to take notes.

When I tell people I'm a dental assistant they respond one of two ways:
a) They say something along the lines of "wow you must really like teeth" and then tell me that dentists have a high suicide rate.
b) Become self concious about their teeth which makes me feel bad.
